Haylage that cut from more mature grass has a high proportion of stem to leaf, is drier and is conserved simply by excluding wrapping the air. Generally a stemmy haylage is lower in energy and protein, with a similar nutrient content to hay and so is suitable to feed to less active horses. Selective breeding has changed many characteristics of the horse but their digestive systems and feeding patterns have not altered. To occupy a stabled horse, stemmy haylage and hay are more suitable for most horses as we want to try and promote ad lib feeding, while controlling body weight.
The well-recognised problem of dust in hay is traditionally tackled by soaking. However, recent research has shown that soaking, even for short periods can significantly increase the bacteria concentration so lowering the hygienic quality of the hay. Low quality hay is linked with colic, and as this is still the biggest cause of death of horses in UK it is best to find an alternative way of dealing with dust.
One such alternative is steaming. Steaming forage, hay and haylage therefore deals with the respirable dust, the bacteria and moulds that cause deterioration of the fodder, so. It is very important to steam properly as partially heating and wetting the fodder in a home-made steamer has also been shown to actually increase bacteria concentrations as with soaking rather than reducing them.
Thorough steaming making sure that steam penetrates all the hay and that temperatures reach in excess of 95oC for 10 minutes is necessary to ensure your fodder is low in dust and free from microbes. The only proven way of achieving this in both hay and haylage is to use a Haygain steamer. HAYGAIN hay steamers are scientifically proven to eliminate respirable dust, killing mould and bacteria in hay and haylage in approximately 50 minutes. Research has shown that soaking hay boosts bacteria growth in just 10 minutes by 1.
Complete nutritional value and goodness are maintained with improved palatability. In other words the majority of the digestive tract is devoted to fibre digestion, while only a small portion is designed to process starch from cereals, oils and proteins.
It is essential in maintaining healthy gut passage and keeping our horses naturally hydrated. Over winter in particular, limited turnout and poor grass quality means that your horse has to rely on adequate fibre rations. Furthermore, high fibre, low concentrate diets are not only good for the gut but also for the mind, having plenty of fibre to chew over will help to occupy and relieve boredom.
Plus, the added bonus, digesting fibre helps your horse to produce heat in order to maintain body temperature and aid condition.
The modern horse has remained, as his ancestors were - trickle feeders. This means they are designed to be eating fibre on a regular basis. Disruptions in this supply can lead to health related issues as the acid level in the stomach tends to increase resulting in gastric upset. This can cause severe discomfort for the horse, which may be noted by loose droppings, vices, irritability when handled and temperamental issues.
Horses with loose droppings can also indicate that there is a lack of long fibre in the diet. So, you can see the importance of addressing the fibre factor content of the diet. To assist the benefits of fibre content, antacids can be fed. These will help to buffer any the acid build up and therefore also help the horse to feel much better on the inside. How do you judge how much to feed your horse? When feeding your horse there are many important factors to take into account.
These include feeding for workload, size, temperament and breed. Workload is a particularly important factor as many people assume if their horse is in hard work they need plenty of concentrate feed in order to make up for the energy burnt from their exercise regime.
This can be true if the forage is poor and therefore providing a source of lowenergy. However feeding a quality balancer will help to provide the optimum requirements needed by our horses in their varied routines. A feed balancer will help to ensure your horse obtains the full value from his feed ration. As bulk is not ideal in any equine diet, a concentrated feed balancer that offers comprehensive vitamin, mineral and trace elements is the best option.
Also look out for Pre and Pro Biotics as these are fast becoming a necessity in the daily equine diet - as the life of a domestic horse, in most cases, is an active one. This can cause a negative effect within the system as toxins are duly released into the blood stream and harmful bacteria may then proliferate.
During this process the bacteria create by-products such as lactic acid, this too can cause gastric upset. Feeding pre and pro biotics will help to maintain and support the good bacteria in the gut and therefore enable. Electing to feed a daily balancer, not only enables you to feed smaller amounts, which is better and healthier for your horse, it also saves you money, plus, because the digestive process is optimised, your horse will maintain optimum condition. It is of the highest supplement specification and has a great sugar free flavour.
The Lifeforce Range is the cornerstone of the Alltech Equine Advantage series, developed to benefit horses at every stage of life, from breeding stock to pleasure and performance animals.

The cold weather has arrived early this year and immediately I noticed my horse dropping weight. Whilst a good rug will help keep them warm, it is also important to keep them heated from the inside with plenty of Saracen Show Improver Pencils fibre. As the temperature drops the grass your horse to stay in top condition will stop growing and it will be necessary Prepare this winter — start the regime now with the Show Improver range from Saracen.
We have had which we take a look at here Taking just five minutes to soak to form a soft textured mash it is very palatable, and if you have a veteran that is starting to struggle to chew and digest the coarse fibres of hay ReadyFibre Mash can be used as a total hay replacer. Fibre-Beet — The Super Fibre Conditioning Feed A Super Fibre conditioning feed, Fibre-Beet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product with added high quality Alfalfa for optimum condition, and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function.
Ideal for horses prone to digestive upsets and very palatable for fussy eaters, Fibre-Beet has added biotin for hoof quality and is approved by The Laminitis Trust. Soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or 15 minutes in warm water. Previously known as Top Form it has had a revamp to provide even greater value, whilst still maintaining top product performance.
Show Improver Mix and Pencils are the ultimate in non-heating, conditioning feeds, whether for that extra condition for the sales or show ring, or to help put and keep condition on thin horses or poor doers, or for horses and ponies needing extra coat gloss.
It is ideal for horses and ponies needing a soft, very palatable chop, perfect for fussy feeders including fit performance horses and elderly horses. The formula for TopChop Grass was tested and developed at the Middle Park Equine Research Unit and has been approved by the nutritional team as suitable for all horses and ponies other than those prone to laminitis and those that need to lose weight TopChop Grass is a high quality chop that can be fed solely with a TopSpec feed balancer or supplement.
Additional feed, for example a TopSpec Blend, can be added if extra nutrients for work or condition are required. It can be used as a hay replacer, especially for elderly horses struggling to maintain condition as a result of poor dentition reducing their ability to chew hay or haylage TopChop Grass is dust-extracted and the grass has been hightemperature dried. These two procedures minimise potential mould, making the chop suitable for horses and ponies with respiratory problems.
Always dampen feed if your horse or pony has respiratory problems. Keep up the good work! As a vet it is extremely reassuring to know that I can refer those with dietary based problems to such a knowledgeable source. Horses have evolved to utilise a high fibre diet, using bacterial fermentation in a highly developed large intestine. Low levels of fibre, or poor quality fibre in the diet put horses at serious risk of problems such as colic and gastric ulcers.
Leaving horses for long periods of time with nothing to eat can also lead to serious digestive and metabolic disturbances. Weather dependent Decent forage is dependent upon the quality of the grass harvested and its dry matter at the time of baling, as weather conditions whilst it is being made will significantly affect the end quality. Most samples of hay contain unacceptably high levels of dust, mould and dust mites, together with their faeces!
If left un-managed, dust exposure can often result in an allergic reaction which may lead to permanent respiratory problems such as RAO Recurrent Airway Obstruction. The problem with dust Freedom from dust and mould spores is probably more important than the nutritional value of forage.
It can sometimes minimise the levels of dust and mould, however it rarely eliminates all spores. In addition the nutrient value of soaked hay will be greatly reduced and once the hay begins to dry the spores will become airborne again. Unlike hay, haylage is usually dust-free, but be sure to choose a brand which clearly states that it is dust-free to be totally certain.
HorseHage is bagged straight from the field to ensure there is no risk of mould or myco-toxins contained in the bag. False economy Good forage at a reasonable price is a cost effective option. Poor hay at any price is a false economy. Top quality bagged forage from a well-established, reliable producer like HorseHage will have a high nutritional value as well as a full nutritional analysis and quality guarantee.
It can be more expensive than hay, but the quality is consistent and there is no waste, plus the nutritional content is far better quality than hay. This means that you can often reduce the level of concentrates you feed. This can help reduce your overall feed bill! Both the High Fibre and Timothy varieties are safe to feed to laminitics, so there is an option to suit all types of horses and ponies. For more information on forage and advice on feeding your horse, please call the HorseHage Helpline on: or visit www.
Protein itself is responsible for providing the building blocks for muscle growth, development and repair, and to some extent providing energy. Providing quality protein in the diet is vital for good health and the quality of the protein is dependent on the amino acids it includes.
The body can synthesize some of these natural amino acids, whereas other sources need to be supplied through diet. One of the natural ways protein can be supplied through feed is using alfalfa. Alfalfa is part of the legume family and thus has the ability to glean nitrogen from the atmosphere, incorporating it into the plant. Using high quality alfalfa is important as the majority of the protein is found within the leaf.
Alpha Plus from Chestnut Horse Feeds offers a digestible blend of quality alfalfa with naturally occurring protein, oil, cereals complete with a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral package. This comprehensive feed is ideal for horses and ponies in moderate to hard work and provides slow releasing energy, with protein and a relatively low starch content.
Keeping Calm on Bonfire Night Bonfire night and the surrounding period can be a cause for concern for horse owners. Finding out any information about displays in your area is the best way to plan ahead, so you know when the majority of the fireworks are going to be let off. You will need to decide whether your horse is going to be stabled for the night or left in the field. Unfortunately fireworks are not limited to 5th November and they can stretch out for a week or more either side of the date.
Feeding a fast acting, highly absorbable liquid calmer, such as Blue Chip Karma is the perfect solution to keeping your horse or pony settled during this period. Even the most sensible horse or pony can become stressed and agitated, with the possibility of harming themselves or others. Blue Chip Karma is a highly palatable liquid based calmer that includes a superior form of water-soluble magnesium, L-tryptophan and Vitamin C. It is recommended to introduce Blue Chip Karma six days before fireworks start at a dose of 50ml per day, this can then be reduced to 25ml daily until fireworks have finished.
For particularly stressy horses the dose can safely be kept at 50ml during the whole period and even increased to ml on 5th November. It is recommended to give one measure an hour before fireworks are due to be set off, with an additional measure to be given if necessary.
For more information on keeping your horses and ponies calm during the firework season visit www. Feed news Feeding The Veteran Every horse ages differently and whilst by definition they might be a veteran, the way age affects them will be very different. As winter approaches it is important to remember the one thing they all have in common is the need for a little more TLC.
Here we look at some of the feeds and supplements specifically available to help your veteran through the colder months. Ideal for veterans and those horses or ponies lacking lustre, Aloeride also helps support healthy skin, conditions hooves and aids rejuvenation and recovery too: all from one taste-free sachet a day.
Lifeforce Focus from Alltech Keeping veteran horses and ponies in tip top condition can often be challenging and one of the largest issues facing our older equines is poor body condition.
A major factor in maintaining body condition is a reduction of nutrient digestion and absorption often caused by deteriorating dentition as it becomes more difficult for veteran horses to chew long forage and release essential nutrients to maintain weight and also as horses age their digestive function declines.
As it is impossible to improve the poor teeth of a veteran, what we can do is ensure the digestive system is functioning at its best to maximise fibre digestion. Lifeforce Focus form Alltech, the experts in equine digestive health, is a supplement specially designed for less active horses and those that spend a lot of time grazing, working to provide preventative care for companion horses.
Lifeforce Focus will help stimulate fibre digestion and help improve overall immune function. Containing all natural ingredients it creates an ideal digestive environment which allows good bacteria to work most effectively throughout the gut helping to prevent digestive upsets.
It also addresses challenges related to weight loss and body condition and provides organic trace minerals that are more easily absorbed and maintained. NAF In the Pink Senior In The Pink Senior is especially formulated to meet all the nutritional requirements of your older horse and is designed to give him all the support he needs to say forever young.

TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer is a very palatable non-heating feed that contains several supplements including the levels of micronutrients and digestive aids normally only found in high quality specialised supplements.
Of particular importance to elderly horses is the inclusion of micronutrients known to help maintain mobility. This superb specification allows elderly horses to utilise far more nutrients from the forage and straights in their diet, which often means that their hard feed intake can be reduced with many resulting benefits. Feeding it will help to maintain good hoof quality and promote a supple skin with a shiny coat. TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer helps to maintain a healthy immune system and also includes a highly available source of vitamin C to help maintain healthy lung tissue.
Feeding it may also lead to a calmer temperament in stressed horses and ponies. It can also be fed with your choice of straights e. Blue Chip Pro contains a probiotic yeast, which increases fibre digestion and allows your veteran to utilise the fibre in his diet more efficiently. The prebiotic in Blue Chip Pro will help to boost their immune system and remove pathogenic bacteria from the foregut. All Blue Chip balancers are whole-cereal and molasses free and contain a natural, fruit derived form of Vitamin E, which is a highly powerful antioxidant.
The small pellets of Blue Chip balancers make it easier for older horses to eat and it can be fed by hand if necessary or could be made into a tempting mash by the addition of warm water. Pro contains high quality protein to provide the necessary amino acids, vital for maintaining muscle mass which can often be a problem for the older horse. Some veterans hold their weight well or can be prone to laminitis, so consider feeding them a low starch, low sugar; low calorie feed balancer such as Blue Chip Lami-light.
Lami-light contains the beneficial nucleotides, fruit derived form of Vitamin E and essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients your veteran requires whilst not encouraging any weight gain.
