Steven, in the first book, A living Nightmare got bitten by Mr. Crepsley's spider, Madam Octa. Crepsley is the person who blooded Darren to make him a vampire. You should read the first book before reading this. In this book, Darren is the assistant of Mr. Crepsley, he learns the way of becoming a vampire, learns the danger of becoming a vampire, and learns the behavior of a vampire.
Vampires don't kill when they feed, they just get enough blood to satisfy them. If I was Mr. Crepsley, I would be patient with Darren because Darren became a vampire at such a young age. I borrowed the whole series at once, just so I can finish it all within about 5 days, so I don't need to leave myself hanging. Unfortunately for me, the bookstore is big and full of millions of books so I'd forget what I was looking for the minute I walked in. Luckily for me, I walked into a bargain bookstore and found an old, extremely damaged version of this book for clearance - so of course I bought it!

Although I am still unable to decipher Darren's age I'm guessing twelve and the dialogue is still flimsy, I found myself easily overlooking these faults and enjoying the story and adventure. It was really nice to see Darren interacting with more people his age, and his new friend, Evra Von, the snake boy, seems like he could be a pretty interesting guy.
We are also introduced to Mr. Tiny in this book, who manages to be almost too weird to be frightening yet at the same time manages it quite well and has you wondering what sort of part he will play in the series. Granted, some of the characters are stereotypical, something that I have always disliked in a good portion of youth books.

This book made me angry, mad, laughed, and cry. Every single sentence gave me chills and goosebumps. One thing I think that makes this book a little better than the first one is how much the Circus was in it. In the first book, we only got to read about the Circus for a few chapters. He thinks all vampires are evil and would rather die than drink from humans but something terribly tragic happens and Darren must not only drink for himself but for his friend.

The book goes off to explain the events that took place before this book and who the character is.
After that the story begins. After having to leave his family and join Mr. Crepsley they go off to join the Cirque du Freak. Once there Darren learns a lot about the circus and all its performers. They keep the circus in check and keep alive. After getting situated he gains a new best friend around his age and both go out to explore the area. They meet new people, some that are good and others that are bad. Both will have to stick together and try to work together to fix the problems presented in the book.
It had a basic plot line and everything that happened was foreshadowed, however somethings came as a surprise. This book has no mercy for anyone, so anyone can be a victim. This makes the book much better in creating a vibe that scares and warns the readers about something that will happen. Overall, the book receives a 5 star rating because of how well it is composed and how great the plot line is.
